What to do when your check engine light comes on.
A steady light may be less urgent than a flashing light, but both deserve attention. If the vehicle runs poorly, overheats, smells like fuel, smokes, or feels unsafe, stop driving and talk to a mechanic.
Before you call
Write down the vehicle, mileage, when the light appeared, whether it flashes, and any sounds, smells, leaks or performance changes.
